Now What??
The California Tomato Growers Association's 58the Annual Meeting addressed the need and benefits for the Tomato Industry to undertake generic promotion through excellent presentations by CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura, Strawberry Commission President Rodger Wasson and Mondavi Institure Executive Director Dr. Clare Hasler. The feedback from attendees has been uniformly positive with commenting that this was the best annual meeting in years. So now What?

1. CTGA will facilitate the formation of an industry-wide promotional board which will determine the scope of the program that can be supported.

  • Input from processors and growers across the state will be solicited.
  • Participation will be voluntary, but to be successful it will require a sizeable majority.

2. CTGA will fine tune its approach toward bargaining:

  • Our goal this past season was to facilitate the process and give growers and processors the flexibility to achieve agreements that made sense for both sides.
  • We communicated market data and analysis which should have helped growers assess processors offers and make informed decisions.
  • We also provided feedback to processors on other processor activities and grower reaction to contract pricing or conditions.
  • You need to decide whether this approach was useful to your operations and if it should continue.

3. Behind the scenes:

  • CTGA will continue to be an advocate for tomato growers - Vapam regulations is an example.
  • It will be involved in activities that affect a grower's bottom line. If we don't see the impact, we won't be involved regardless of any previous connection.
  • If it make economic sense we will lease out our existing offices and move to a smaller location. Our organization is much leaner than it was even 12 months ago (not to mention eight years ago when the office was bulit) so why not generate income that could be used more productively.

The CTGA Board and I will be in contact to discuss these issues with you. The feedback that we're receiving is we're heading in the right direction. Let us know what you think.
